Which scale map?

Ordnance Survey offer two series of maps which are particularly suitable for use in following rights of way.

The Landranger series are at scale 1:50,000 (1 1/4 inches to 1 mile, or 2cm to 1km). They show bridleways and byways based on information from the local definitive map. Landranger maps have a pink cover. They are great for longer distance route planning.

The Explorer series are at a scale of 1:25,000 (2 1/2 inches to 1 mile, or 4cm to 1km). They show bridleway and byways, and some permissive routes, all based on information obtained from the local authority. Explorer maps can be identified by their orange covers. They are useful for telling more precisely where a right of way goes than the landranger series, and for permissive routes, but cover a small area.
