This Countryside Agency National Trail is a bridleway
along its entire length. It was designated in 1972 as the
first long distance bridleway and is suitable for cyclists.
The trail starts in Eastbourne, East Sussex, and runs
for 100 miles (161km) to Winchester, Hampshire. Wide grassy tracks, well
drained soils, and a lack of stiles makes it suitable for all ages
and abilities.
Status: Open, promoted route (National Trail) Promotion
The South Downs Way has a website at http://www.nationaltrails.gov.uk/southdownsframeset.htm
which contains detailed maps of the route and provides
links to sources of other information that will be of
use to the equestrian traveller.
