CANTER: Creating A Network to Encourage Riding

" It's never been a more important time to get involved in equestrian Access. Help us to defend, extend, and promote a safe network for all riders and carriage drivers "

Henry Whittaker, Senior Executive, Access

Ways you can get involved with the CANTER Campaign

Promoted Routes

If you've taken a look around the site, you will know that the National Bridleroute Network is largely made up of promoted routes. It takes a lot of work to get one of these onto the network. From the very first time someone draws a line on a map until to the launch of the leaflet, a good deal of BHS staff and -crucially- volunteers time is needed.

You could map, test ride the route, fundraise, help us find local B&B, help out with the design and distribution of the leaflets, or organise the launch. You could do all of these things or just one - any contribution of your time is so valuable to us.

Opening ways

While CANTER's major focus is promoting and extending the National Bridleroute Network, if there are no paths to ride, there is no network. It's always been a core function of the Access Department's work to respond to Definitive Map Modification Order (DMMO), planning applications, and consultations from government, striving to ensure that riders get as fair a deal as possible.

In a typical week we can receive around 150 DMMO orders. We pass these on to our volunteers throughout the UK, who use their local knowledge and training to fight the equestrian fight at a local level. Without them, we'd be very stuck indeed. If you think you could join our legion of volunteers, email access@bhs.org.uk for more information or call 01926 707712.

Lost Ways
In 2026, the process that determines whether a route is put onto the Definitive Map will change. this will result in the Definitive Map for each county being closed to applications based on historic research. you can find out more about he DLW project at
www.countryside.gov.uk/LAR/Access/DLW/index.asp

If you know of a route that might fit in, why not volunteer to research it?

For more information on how to get involved with access work for the BHS, members can find the contact details of their County Access and Bridleways Officer (CABO) in the BHS Yearbook.

If you're not a member, please contact the BHS Access Department on 01926 707813.

If you're not a member, and are unable to volunteer you time, help us carry on our work for the benefit of every horse and rider by becoming a member of The BHS - more information on BHS membership can be found by clicking here.
