The concept of CANTER was first discussed in 2004 when the BHS Access Department saw a need to refocus its Access Week campaign. The nature of access work is that what works in one area of
the UK may not work in another. So the work being carried out on behalf of the
BHS across Britain was diverse while working towards the same goal. The CANTER campaign gathers together information on the
work we do, and provides a focused and forward-looking public face for staff and
volunteers. This drawing-together of our resources gives us greater strength and
more opportunities to develop the work we do for every rider and carriage
driver. Why CANTER? It’s what we all do! No matter what work our volunteers undertake, the focus is the same - defending, extending and promoting a safe and easily accessible off-road network. This can be in creating a promoted route for Ride UK,
whether this is a 100-mile-long linear route or a five-mile community circuit.
We need them all! It can also be in dealing with DMMO orders to create, modify or divert a right of way in your area. And it can be in raising awareness of equestrian needs by sitting on a Local Access Forum - or any of the manifold activities of our volunteers and other supporters. It is vital you get involved.
